The Parish of Sandal Magna

Dedication of a Plaque on 9th June

On the 9th June, there will be a special ceremony in St Helens’ Church to dedicate a commemorative plaque which will be placed on the wall alongside the church path. The inscription say: "On Saturday 8th June 1940, 3rd Battalion Grenadier Guards mustered behind this Church to count those killed and missing during the withdrawal to Dunkirk. On Sunday the Battalion returned to worship in St Helen’s. Wakefield’s hospitality helped restore spirits for subsequent actions in North Africa and Italy."

The idea for the plaque came from Gerry Southworth, who witnessed this significant event as an 11 year old boy. The plaque has been organised by Kevin Trickett MBE, President of the Wakefield Civic Society and sponsored by the Grenadier Guards. The ceremony will be attended by Squadron Leader David Dinmore MBE, Deputy Lieutenant for West Yorkshire, Mary Creagh MP and Brigadier David Madden formerly of the Grenadier Guards.

The ceremony of Dedicating the Plaque will take place in St Helen’s at 11am on Saturday 9th June, and is open to anyone who wishes to attend. Refreshments will be served afterwards.
